Due to the closeness in which partners hold each other in this dance, it was considered immoral in the 16th Century when it was conceived from a peasant dance in France in 1559. Louis XIII even had it banned!

Footwork and steps are very simple. There is a slight swaying throughout the dance, and lots of rotation. There are only 3 steps : Natural turns, reverse turns and change steps.

The dance was created in 1914 when people mimicked the dancing of Henry Fox in New York. Henry and Yansci Dolly performed the routine in New York Theatre, and onlookers copied the dance on the roof of the theatre at the "Jardin de Danse", and "Fox's Trot" was born.

The dance is very smooth and should never be abrupt. The timing is slow-quick-quick-slow, and the dancers should move off on the slow, and let the feet take over for the quicks. The dance is serious and this should be reflected in the faces of the participants.

The basic steps are reverse turns, natural turns, feather steps, weaves and lines. Generally the dance is done in a criss-cross across the floor.

In the 1920's, some people couldn't keep up with the original quickstep, whilst others liked to dance it faster. It is the faster version that is referred to as the Quickstep, and it incorporates elements of the Charleston.

The dance is very quick and there is a lot of work on the balls of the feet - strong ankles are needed! The timing is slow-quick-quick-slow-quick-quick, normally heel-toe-toe-heel-toe-toe, though this can vary.

Steps are the natural and reverse turns, plus chasse, lock step, turning lock step, spin turn, pivot and runs.

Rumour has it that the dance started in Argentina and the reason that the lady tilts her head back is because the men who danced it often were unclean! Her hand rests in his back pocket, ready to sieze his wallet!

The tango is not at all fluid, and is extremely rigid and angular. The facial expression is extremely serious throughout. The dance is also very flat with no rise and fall, with the knees slightly bent.

Walks, links, rock turns and 'promenade position' (where both dancers walk side by side) are all used.

With the same timing as the Waltz, this dance is much faster, with it's own intricacies and intrigue.
